At some point in their lifetime as a homeowner, everyone will have to deal with the unpleasant experience of dealing with a clogged drain. For many people, the first and most convenient method for doing so is using a clog-clearing chemical. However, it’s important to double-check the facts about the chemical you’re thinking about using before you pour it down your drain.
While the vast majority of clog-clearing chemicals advertise that they are safe for your pipes, you may be surprised to learn that this claim may come with a caveat or two. The chemical may be safe for certain types of modern pipes, but may not be safe for older systems. Or, the chemical may be safe for your pipes, but it may strip the enamel from your fixture, or kill helpful bacteria in your septic system. In the long run, it’s a good idea to read the fine print on the label of the product before you make any decisions.
